The six concerts that make up the Hungarian National Philharmonic’s Kocsis subscription series in the 2026/2027 season await visitors to the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall at Müpa Budapest with monumental masterpieces from 19th- and 20th-century music history. Audiences are invited to savour a rich selection of romantic, late-romantic and post-romantic masterpieces: Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony will resound in every corner of the hall, we will encounter Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Mahler’s rarely performed Symphony No. 6 will be heard along with the rightly popular Adagietto from his Symphony No. 5. We will also delight in Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, Schumann’s Genoveva Overture and his Piano Concerto in A minor, while the profound emotion evoked by Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs is an essential experience, as is the serene cheer brought by the German composer's virtuosically orchestrated musical adventure novel, Don Quixote. The proud joie de vivre of the Wagnerian masterpiece that is the overture to Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg, is sure to enchant, while Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D major and Bartók’s youthful Violin Concerto No. 1 will captivate with their post-romantic harmonic richness and the passionate intensity of their melodies. Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor conceals a serious message within movements disguised as character pieces. The subscription programme also features 20th-century Hungarian rarities: György Kósa’s Symphony No. 7 (subtitled “Mohács”) will receive its world premiere, while Rezső Sugár’s oratorio Hunyadi – Heroic Song promises the joy of a long-awaited reunion. Also among the rarities is Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G minor in Schoenberg’s arrangement for symphony orchestra. Taking to the conductor’s podium will be such maestros as János Kovács, Lawrence Foster, György Vashegyi, Alevtina Ioffe and Gabriel Bebeșelea. We will also welcome a host of superb singers including Andrea Brassói-Jörös, Atala Schöck, István Kovácsházi, Csaba Sándor and Katalin Szutrély, as well as hearing the world-renowned piano playing of Dénes Várjon. These subscription concerts also represent a chance to admire the artistry of three outstanding violin virtuosi: Júlia Pusker, Timothy Chooi and Alina Baeva.
