From the autumn of 1861 Franz Liszt spent more and more time in Rome, where his attention turned to church music. The following year he completed his first oratorio entitled ‘The Legend of Saint Elizabeth’. The composer was fascinated by the life story of the Hungarian princess and Bavarian duchess. Liszt writes about it as follows: I have a special and tender connection to Saint Elizabeth. I was born in Hungary, just like her, and I spent the twelve years that determined my fate in Thuringia, very close to Wartburg Castle, where she lived, and to Marburg, where she died.” The oratorio premiered in Pest (Hungary) on 15th August 1865, and the piece was conducted by the Hungarian composer himself.
