In the Spirit of Freedom and Playfulness – Károly Makk 100

After the film, a roundtable discussion will be held with the participation of cinematographer Tamás Andor, film aesthete Gábor Gelencsér, and film director Péter Fazakas, moderated by Eszter Fazekas, head of film restoration and digitization, NFI – Film Archive.

Károly Makk’s third work in his ‘pre-modern trilogy’ is also a characteristic existential story: during training, a young parachutist vies with his friends to see who dares fall further. The coach decides to put a stop to this dangerous recklessness, by force if necessary. When making a jump he wants to force Peti to open his parachute first but the lad is defiant and consequently pays with his life. Although an investigation clears the coach of responsibility, the consciences of the team and the trainer continue to be stricken…

Supporting film:

Deep Water
Mélyvíz, Hungarian animation, colour, 1970, dir: Marcell Jankovics, No Dialogue, 2’

The film depicts the last moments of a drowning person, who shouts for help in vain. The visual design of this two minute-long short film uses energetic, sweeping lines, which are reminiscent of the dramatic effects of linocuts.
