Now 70 years old, the pianist, composer and teacher views music as far more than just a series of notes; for him, it is a form of self-expression, a vehicle for ideas and a philosophy of life. For decades, he has been an inspiration to several generations of students, fellow musicians and fans. The Indian percussionist Ramesh Shotham first earned recognition as a rock drummer before returning to the traditional music of his homeland. He has since collaborated with such artists as Steve Coleman, Charlie Mariano, Carla Bley and Rabih Abou-Khalil. He first started performing and recording with Károly Binder in the 1990s.
