Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) was a descendant of a highly cultured and exceedingly wealthy Berlin Jewish bourgeois family that converted to Protestantism and played a defining role in the German Enlightenment of the 18th and 19th centuries. Hailed by Goethe as “the second Mozart”, Mendelssohn’s oeuvre includes an important and outstanding chapter in the form of his sacred choral works, which are receptive to Baroque influences while being rooted in classical formal culture and Romantic sensibility. Performances of pieces from this area of his output are, however, rarely heard on concert programmes. On this occasion, a full concert-length selection from his religious compositions will be heard: in the first half, four shorter works are to be performed, the first of which is the Kyrie in D minor. The three that follow are set to German chorale or psalm texts. After the interval comes the eight-movement Lauda Sion, composed in 1846 and based on a medieval Latin sequence. The conductor for the evening is the Kossuth Prize-winning György Vashegyi, founder and director of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra and general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. He has long devoted particular attention to Mendelssohn’s sacred works. Born in Buenos Aires, the soprano Mercedes Arcuri, who is primarily celebrated for her Baroque repertoire, is a highly regarded figure in the international singing world. Meanwhile, Eszter Balogh, Zoltán Megyesi and Zsombor Cserményi are versatile favourites of Hungarian audiences.
