A band committed to modernising Indian classical music, Araj consists of five young musicians considered in their homeland to be the outstanding performers of their generation. Formed by tabla player Ishaan Ghosh, all members are virtuosos of their instruments (tabla, sitar, bamboo flute, sarangi) and vocal techniques, and their interplay breathes new life into the Indian classical tradition. While each member has deep roots in Indian classical music, Araj performs in an improvisational, jazz-inspired style, blending their individual personalities and musicality into a cohesive whole – and bearing a not-so-distant kinship with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain’s Shakti, who have already performed at Müpa previously.
